Why Were Jewish People Redeemed from Egypt
When looking at the Exodus story one has to wonder: Why did God intervene to save the Jewish people from Egyptian slavery when countless other nations have suffered similar horrors throughout history? Where is Hashem when injustice happens?
The Jewish people weren't just rescued - they graduated. They went from being slaves to being servants. And there's a world of difference between the two.
Both a slave and a servant advance someone else's agenda. However, advancing the agenda of a human tyrant snuffs out one's inner nobility. In contrast, advancing the agenda of the Ultimate Being actualizes one's inherent nobility. It brings out one's greatness. It gives purpose, direction, meaning. The Jewish people didn't leave Egypt to do whatever they wanted - they left to serve something higher than themselves.
True nobility is a state of being, not a social status. The capacity to actualize and express one's higher self is true freedom. Think of the concert pianist spending countless hours practicing while others are out having a "good time." In the end, who actually has the good time? The one who developed one's potential, or the one who settled for shallow pleasures?
The freedom the Jewish people received wasn't removal of responsibility - it was acceptance of responsibility. The type that actualizes human potential and highlights the inherent human nobility we all share.
